Chapter 9

He found Madeline sitting on a rock not far south of their camp. He’d given her an hour before he set out to look for her. It was an hour of impatiently waiting, pacing, and trying to figure out why they couldn’t get along.

Things had been going great the night before. It was almost like she’d forgotten all her qualms with life on the island. And then this morning, she’d confessed how much she wanted to be with him, their children, and their soon-to-be grandchild. Sure, his reaction hadn’t been the best, but he didn’t understand why she wouldn’t come home, if it was what she really wanted.

He knew she needed time alone, and he tried his best to give it to her. The truth was, he needed a chance to think, to cool off, himself. But after an hour of wondering where she’d gone and worrying whether she was alright, Samuel couldn’t wait any longer.

It didn’t take him long to find her. She hadn’t gone far, after all. She’d only walked far enough to be out of eyesight of the camp, around an outcropping of large boulders that seemed out of place in the meadow.

Approaching from behind, Samuel had time to appreciate the sight of her there, lounging on the rocks, leaning back with her arms propping her up. Her head was cast back and her hair, now loose from the braid, flowed down in long waves. The noon sun glistened off her white hair, almost making it look like the blonde of her youth.

He couldn’t see her face, but Samuel imagined her eyes were closed, basking in the sunshine.

“You look exactly like you did when we first bought the property on the cove.”

Madeline started when she heard his voice. She hadn’t noticed him approaching.

“Not exactly,” she said dryly. “That was 30 years ago. I’m not a young woman anymore.”

“You may not feel it, but you’re the same person,” Samuel said. “You used to sit like this on the beach, watching the waves for hours. You said it was calming. I never realized what you really meant. If you needed the calm of the ocean to help you relax, then something must have been weighing you down.”

“Let’s not get into it again. Not now.” Madeline stood up and walked past him, heading back toward their camp. The last thing she wanted to do was rehash a decades-old argument. No matter how many times she tried to explain it, he never understood.

Samuel turned and followed.

The revelation that Madeline was working on the road so she could return home had gotten Samuel contemplating. As much as he wanted to believe her, he didn’t fully trust her words. He knew, deep down, she wasn’t ready to come back to Heron. She’d been away for so long, grown accustomed to a different kind of life. The fact was, a road connecting Heron to some other remote community wasn’t going to do much to ease Madeline’s reservations about the isolation. The idea that the road would solve all their problems was nothing more than wishful thinking.
